When recycled Aluminum becomes Artwork
70km from the capital Antananarivo, “Ambatolampy” is known for their handmade aluminum pot foundries. The aluminum mostly comes from used material. The material is gathered and dissolved on a brick furnace (600˚C - 660˚C).
The melted aluminum is then moved to a small local, simultaneously a single use mold is created (mold for a pot or another object). The object is covered in thin white sand and mixed with wood charcoal dust.
The dissolved aluminum will be poured on the mold, cooled with water and removed from the mold. The object is polished and the masterpiece is revealed. From their hard-earned work and skills, they bring to light beautiful artwork.
